The low-pressure fuel pump sits inside your fuel tank and pressurises the lines that feed the injectors. Inside it is an impeller — the spinning part that moves the fuel.
On affected pumps that impeller was improperly molded and came out at too low a density. Over time and with heat exposure, it can swell and deform until it binds against the pump housing.
When that happens the pump does not weaken gradually. It stops.
An inoperative fuel pump produces one of two outcomes. Either the engine will not start, which is inconvenient. Or the engine stalls while you are driving it, which is not.
