1. A high-pitched squeal when you brake. That's the wear indicator — a small metal tab designed to contact the rotor and make noise when pad material gets low. It is an early warning, not an emergency, and it is the cheapest time to act.
2. Grinding or scraping. This is no longer a warning. The friction material is gone and metal is cutting metal. A pad-only job has now become pads and rotors, and possibly a caliper.
3. Pulsation in the pedal or steering wheel. Usually rotor thickness variation from heat cycling. Sometimes it can be machined; on many Acura rotors, replacement is the correct repair because the rotors are designed thin for weight savings.
4. The pedal goes farther down than it used to. Air, moisture in the fluid, or a failing master cylinder. This one gets checked the same week.
5. The vehicle pulls to one side under braking. Typically a seized caliper slide or a collapsed brake hose. Left alone it destroys one side's pads and rotor rapidly.
6. Brake or ABS warning light. Could be fluid level, a wheel speed sensor, or the electronic parking brake module. All of them need a scan tool that reads Acura's system, not a generic code reader.
