Automatic transmission fluid does two jobs: it provides the friction characteristics the clutch packs need to engage correctly, and it carries heat away. Both degrade with time and heat cycling. When they do, you get shift shudder, delayed engagement, or harsh shifts — and by then internal wear has already begun.

Automatic transmission fluid is not a lubricant with a viscosity rating. It is an engineered friction modifier. The clutch packs inside your Acura transmission engage by controlled slipping, and the exact rate at which they grab is determined by the fluid's friction characteristics. Acura specified ATF DW-1 and calibrated the transmission control module's shift pressures and timing around that specific fluid.
A 'universal' or 'compatible with DW-1' fluid may meet a viscosity spec while behaving differently under clutch pressure. The symptom customers describe is a shudder — usually at light throttle around 25 to 45 mph, often mistaken for an engine misfire or a bad torque converter. In many cases the transmission is mechanically fine and the fluid is simply wrong.
The same principle applies to dual-clutch transmissions and to SH-AWD rear differentials, which use a specific fluid to allow the torque-vectoring clutch packs to engage smoothly. Wrong differential fluid in an SH-AWD unit produces a distinctive shudder or binding sensation in tight turns — often the first sign, and the last cheap moment to fix it.

DCT-equipped models use a dedicated fluid with different friction and cooling requirements. Interval is shorter than a conventional automatic and should not be estimated.

The torque-vectoring clutch packs depend on correct fluid to engage smoothly. Degraded differential fluid produces shudder or binding in tight turns, and continued driving wears the clutch packs themselves.
Not necessarily, and this is worth diagnosing before assuming the worst. A light-throttle shudder in that speed range is most commonly related to torque converter lockup and degraded or incorrect transmission fluid. It is frequently resolved with a proper fluid exchange using Genuine Acura ATF. Bring it in and we will diagnose before recommending anything major.
Acura specifies Type 2 long-life engine coolant, signaled by Maintenance Minder sub-code 5. Type 2 carries a specific corrosion-inhibitor package matched to the aluminum and gasket materials in Acura engines. Generic green coolant is not an acceptable substitute and can accelerate corrosion of the water pump and radiator.
